I'm not sure how, but it's nearly 10pm on Friday night and we're all still surviving. Talk about a tiring week.
Wednesday night she was up 5 times. Thursday (last) night she was up 4 times... 12:30, 1:30, 2:30 and 5:15...
I don't know how much longer I can keep this up.
So here's how the week went as far as her medicine...
I ended up calling the doctor's office at some point early in the week. My brain is so fuzzy I'm not sure if it was Monday or Tuesday or what. Anyways, I told them that it is near impossible to give Laura her meds and definitely impossible to get the full dose into her. The nurse told me that as long as her fever is gone (which it was), that she's getting some of it... which I know - I just didn't like the idea of how much she gagged and coughed as we were trying to give it. I also asked for a second bottle of the bactrim to be called into the pharmacy because there was no way the one bottle would last the full 10 days. (especially when I'd mix a cc or so into some food and she'd spit at the first bite - I'd waste that and we'd have to draw up more to get the full amount to squirt into her).
So, at some point in the middle of the week... maybe it was Wednesday? I stopped at Rite Aid to pick up some teething tablets for Laura. And what did they have in stock!?! The "reliadose" bottle - same idea as a medibottle, but it was in my hands. I coudn't leave it there even though I have one on order from the net. So I came home with that thinking that it'd work and I was quite pleased to have found it. We tried it that evening with Laura and surprise surprise - she liked the bottle at first - then she tasted the medicine and wouldn't take it very well. We did get maybe 3/4 of the dose in her with it though. We tried it the next morning (Thursday) but it didn't work. That morning we ended up being able to squirt half the dose in her cheek and she was crying...I was crying... we ended up throwing the last bit of the med in the syringe away. I was too frustrated to keep making her cry like that and gag. Oh, and she had developed green snot and a terrible cough by this point... so of course my brain is thinking I've made her aspirate on it and now she has either bronchitis or pneumonia. Great. Can I get a second mom of the year award? (I think I got one a few weeks back for something just as stellar, but at this point I can't recall what!)
Thursday - I call the doctor's office and ask to speak to the NP that we saw last week. She's not in. They say they'll have a nurse call me. 5pm I get a call from a very nice nurse and she says she's stumped... actually said she was delaying calling me bacause she was racking her brain and everyone else's in the office trying to come up with something to get her to take it better. She didn't really have any suggestions that we hadn't already tried so she put a note in the computer to have the NP call me Friday.
Friday - I get a call saying they'll call in another prescription for something different that is typically tolerated better. I'm skeptical that changing the med will do any good, but I give it a try. We pick it up and try it - same thing - gags, coughs, spits, cries. We got about the same amount into her as we had been getting with the other stuff. They even told me on the phone to "give it with a syringe into her cheek instead of with a spoon" ...yep, been doing that. "try mixing it with juice" ... yep, tried that. She's a smart stubborn girl. What else is there to say?
4.5 more days of antibiotic fights.

Hi Andrea! It's been awhile since I've been able to be on and really catch up. Poor baby, poor parents. We're praying she gets better soon for her sake and yours! Horray for some walking!!
Yes, the Laura Ingalls day was fun for the girls...they made cornhusk dolls, played with old toys and stilts, and there were other crafts to do. We even saw the real Nellie and her share stories. Hopefully, by the time Laura can come they will be a little better organized though :)
Sorry you guys have having such a rough week! I hope everyone gets some much needed sleep and that the last few days of medicine go by quickly. Sounds awful.
You've been in our thoughts and prayers this week. We hope things are starting to look up and that you're able to get some rest. Love you!
oh sweety! I'm sure you have tried these suggestions but here are a few, take em or leave em:
do the eye dropper in the back of her throat while she is sucking on a sussie, or drop a few and put the sussie in
get it flavoured. Call around and FIND a place that does it. Lots of places will
do you have a nursing aid? or a thing eye dropper? Nurse and when she is 'falling asleep' start to squeeze some into the corner of her mouth while nursing
what about giving it to her while she is sleeping? If she takes a sussie give it to her at the same time while she is out, even a bit (dont' fill the whole dose in cause it's not all going to go in every time)
if she still has the startle reflex put a bit in her mouth and blow hard on her face, she will starttle and swallow. It's just a reaction they have.
mix with baby pain meds that she already takes that has a flavour.
I'm assuming you tried the nipple one? you take a bottle nipple, add some med and some juice or something and just hold the nipple and have her try,
Walmart has a sussie drug thing that you can use as well. you put the meds in the bottom and they suck on it like a sussie.
hugs to both of you. I know how hard it is! It was hell doing K's meds before we found out they could be flavoured. Maybe think of getting a juice that's consintrated and put a bit in with the meds to add your own flavour.
